Big Sky Ventures Inc. is an organic sea buckthorn berry orchard and licensed cottage winery located in Chipman, New Brunswick. They harvest 100% certified organic and certified Kosher Hippophae rhamnoides (Sea buckthorns). The shrub itself contains over 190 bioactive substances and its fruit, distinguished by its bright orange color, is known to be packed with nutriments (vitamin C, vitamin E, antioxidants, essential fatty acids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and minerals) and to provide various health benefits (boosting immune system, skin health, digestion, inflammatory). Big Sky Ventures puts forward the powerful nutraceutical, pharmaceutical, environmental and cosmetic proprieties of this plant. They currently offer a wide variety of fresh products from sea buckthorn berries such as frozen berries, dried powder, juice in addition to transformed products including wine, cuticle oil, face serum, face cream, lip therapy and soap.
Big Sky Ventures sells Sea Buckthorn frozen berries, juice, powder, wine, face cream and serum plus other value-added Sea buckthorn products and are currently looking at shelf stable juice with other products currently under development.
A considerable amount of by-product is generated during the production of sea buckthorn juice and Big Sky Ventures is also looking at optimizing their valorization process, adding further value to this product while also reducing waste which is packed with carotenoids, rich antioxidants, from the skin.
Big Sky Ventures is currently selling and distributing their products to Fredericton, Moncton, Saint-John, and surrounding area. They also sell their Sea Buckthorn oil to a cosmetic company and juice to a few out of province distillers.
The company has been slowly building the health of the crop to be the largest certified organic Sea Buckthorn farm in Canada and rather than incur debt through loans or investors, has put all profits back into the farm, thus creating a “move in” ready business with no debt. With the sale of the farm, the owners are willing to stay on as crop subject matter experts and farm managers until the new owners are ready to inject their own modern or updated vision for the operation.
